Electricity Industry

There’s a massive network of power stations spread across the country, that keeps electricity flowing into our houses.

This Apprenticeship covers three main areas of the electricity industry:

  • Generation (power stations and other electricity-generating methods)
  • Transmission (the National Grid)
  • Distribution (taking the electricity from the transmission network).

As an apprentice on the generation pathway of this Apprenticeship, you’d learn how to operate and maintain the equipment that produces electricity in power stations. You could be diagnosing and repairing faults on machinery, testing equipment; and handling the materials that the plant uses to generate electricity.

In the distribution and transmission pathways, you’d be installing and maintaining the network that supplies electricity to homes and businesses. This work can involve many tasks, like joining and repairing cables, maintaining substations, and building or repairing power lines.

All areas of this Apprenticeship focus on the installation and maintenance of plant and equipment associated with electricity distribution, transmission and generation. Health and safety plays a major role in all areas of training.

The sector also faces many exciting changes as it must come up with new ways to generate electricity – with this Apprenticeship you could be part of it.
