Photo Imaging for Staff Photographers

This Advanced Apprenticeship is designed to give apprentices the skills to become a staff photographer. Staff photographers work under contract for a business or organisation – for example, they might work for a museum taking photographs of exhibits for archival purposes, or work for the RAF taking promotional photographs of fighter jets.

By going digital, the photo imaging sector has undergone its biggest revolution since the invention of colour photography. Today, one photographer is able to do everything from taking a picture all the way through to processing, printing and archiving it.

Staff photographers carry out a wide range of duties from maintaining photographic equipment to colour management and print processing.

As an advanced apprentice, you’ll learn lighting techniques, technical photography skills, copying techniques, close-up photography and a range of advanced camera handling techniques. You might learn how to check image quality, choose and prepare locations, process and print photos, and retouch images with Photoshop.

There are job opportunities for staff photographers in the public and private sectors, as well as the armed forces. With time and experience, you could eventually become self-employed and work freelance across a number of projects.
